Attukula Upma |Poha

Poha/ Attukulu or you can say flattened rice, they are thin, flat and crisp in texture used to make authentic Indian breakfast. It’s most popular in Maharashtrian breakfast and it’s available on street food stalls also it’s famous in south India serves as breakfast but mostly it won’t available on street food πŸ™‚ We often make poha upma or attukula upma at breakfast time, super easy, tasty and worth making at home. I have shared a detailed procedure included with a video clip of making poha/ Attukulu upma at home. Either you can serve it with Spicy Roasted chickpea Powder or fried chilies or dry roasted peanuts.

1 cup = 160 grams

  • Poha / Attukulu / Pressed rice – 3 cups – Wash twice, drain water and set aside
  • Tamarind – 1/2 tbsp – soaked 15 mins in 60ml water
  • Green chilies – 5
  • Fresh coconut – 1/2 cup
  • Coriander leaves – 2 tbsp – garnish
  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Urad dal – 1 tbsp
  • Chana dal – 1 tbsp
  • Curry leaves – 8
  • Onion – 1 medium-sized – chopped
  • Tomatoes – 2 – chopped
  • Salt – 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1 tsp


  • Firstly, blend green chilies and coconut into a smooth paste and keep it aside
  • On medium heated pan add oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, urad dal, and chana dal, saute till lightly brown
  • Next, add curry leaves, saute and add onion saute for 3 mins’
  • Then add in chopped tomatoes and saute 3 more mins
  • Next, add in salt and turmeric powder, saute a minute then goes in grounded masala
  • Saute 2 mins and add in tamarind water, saute 2 minutes
  • Finally add poha, combine well and cover with the lid
  • After cooking 5 mins open lid and add coriander leaves and gently mix
  • Serve hot with podi and dry roasted peanuts (optional)
