Side dish: Small onion sambar

Sambar is a Savory Lentils Soup or stew made with Red Gram, freshly chopped veggies and by adding Homemade Sambar Powder. Today I am sharing the easiest sambar recipe with shallots or small onion. It serves as a side dish for South Indian Breakfasts such as Poori, Dosa, Idly and at lunch, you can serve with rice or Chapathi. This Sambar is flavorful and delicious šŸ˜‹ I hope you will try and enjoy it!

Letā€™s start with Ingredients and follows Procedure

Ingredients:

  • Small onions – 250 grams
  • Split red gram/ toor dal/ Kandi Pappu – cooked – 80 grams
  • sambar powderĀ (homemade) – 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Coconut oil – 1 tbsp
  • Coriander leaves – 2 tbsp – chopped
  • Tamarind pulp – 1 teaspoon – soaked in 2tbsp water
  • Salt- 1 tsp
  • Hing / asafoetida – 1/4 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – 8
  • Water – 100 ml to cook onions
  • Water – 320 ml to make sambar

Procedure:

How to cook toor dal?

  • In a bowl add red gram and wash twice, drain the water then transfer dal to a pressure cooker, add turmeric powder (1/2 tsp ) and water ( 200 ml )
  • Cook for 3 whistles and turn off the heat. When the pressure released, open the lid and saute with ladle then transfer to a bowl. Keep it aside

Process of making sambar:

  • On a medium heated skillet, add oil
  • When it’s hot add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves
  • Saute half a minute or till they splutter, then add shallots/ small onions
  • Saute 5 minutes then add hing, turmeric powder, and salt
  • Saute and add water 100 ml, cover with the lid and cook for 10 mins
  • Then add cooked dal, tamarind water, jaggery, sambar powder, saute a minute
  • Next, add 320 ml water and combine well
  • Cover with lid and cook sambar for 10 more minutes
  • When sambar cooked well, turn off the heat and add coriander leaves
  • Combine well and serve with rice and papad šŸ™‚
