Side Dish: Curry leaves powder/ Karivepaku podi

Healthy, tasty and nutritious podi recipe with curry leaves. Curry leaves are also called “karivepaku” in the native language, the main nutrients are iron, fiber, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, amino acids, and antioxidants and also included vitamins A, C, E & B it’s good to use often curry leaves in your daily diet. This recipe served as a side dish with South Indian breakfast idli/dosa/ upma and rice topped with ghee( clarified butter) it’s is very simple to make at home. I do use them regularly in most of the recipes, they add great flavor along with nutrients.
Let’s start with ingredients and follows the procedure
Ingredients:
- Curry leaves or karivepaku – 1 bowl
- Urad dal – 1 tbsp
- Chana dal – 1 tbsp
- Peanuts – 2 tbsp
- Peppercorns – 15
- Cumin seeds – 1 Tbsp
- Coriander seeds – 2 tbsp
- Byadgi red chilies – 3 ( if you would like to use regular dry red chilies, make sure to reduce peppercorns quantity )
- Oil – 1 tbsp
- Tamarind paste – 1 tsp
- Jaggery piece – 1 inch
- salt – 1 tsp
Procedure:
- On a medium heated pan, add urad dal, chana dal, peanuts and peppercorns
- Dry roast till they turn lightly golden brown and aromatic
- Next add 2 teaspoons oil then add cumin seeds, coriander seeds, and byadgi red chilies
- Saute and fry till they turn aromatic and color changes
- Finally, add 1/2 tbsp oil and a bowl of curry leaves, saute them and fry till they become crisp in texture
- Transfer all the roasted ingredients to a plate, let it cool down
- Next, add them in a mixer jar, add tamarind, jaggery, and salt
- Blend all together into a fine powder
- Serve curry leaves podi with idli /dosa/rice with ghee. It’s healthy and tasty
