Side Dish: Vegetable Sambar

Sambar is a Savory Lentils Soup or stew made with Red Gram, freshly chopped veggies and by adding Β Homemade Sambar Powder and finally topped with tempering. It serves as a side dish for South Indian Breakfasts such as Poori, Dosa, Idly and at lunch you can serve with rice or Chapathi. This Sambar is flavorful and delicious πŸ˜‹Β I hope you will try and enjoy!

Let’s start with Ingredients and follows Procedure


  • Red Gram lentils/ Kandi Pappu – 80 gms ( wash twice with water)
  • Onion – 1/2 – Β chopped
  • Tomatoes – 2 – chopped
  • Carrot – 1 – Peeled off- chopped
  • Radish – 1 – Peeled off and chopped
  • Turmeric Powder – 1/4 teaspoon
  • Salt – 1 1/2 teaspoon
  • Sambar Powder (Homemade)Β – 1 Tb sp ( which I prepared isn’t spicy )
  • Tamarind juice – 2 Tb sp
  • Coconut Oil – 1 tsp ( you can use any cooking oil)
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
  • Curry leaves – 8
  • Hing – 1/4 teaspoon
  • Cilantro – chopped – 1/2 cup
  • Jaggery – 1 small piece



  • First add in lentils, carrot, radish, onion and tomatoes πŸ…Β in cooker along with turmeric powder and 2 cups of water. Pressure cook for 3 whistles and turn off heat and keep aside
  • Now, Prepare tempering in a small pan. add in oil, mustard seeds , cumin seeds, Hing and curry leaves. SautΓ© for a minute or so and turn off heat, Keep it aside.
  • When the pressure releases, open lid and gently mix with ladle and then add salt, Sambar Powder, Jaggery, tamarind pulp, coriander leaves, tempering. Combine well and it cook for 15 minutes on low-medium heat. Stir in between and turn off heat when it comes to a boil
  • Take out Sambar in a wide bowl and serve with rice or roti or Chapathi or idly πŸ˜€ choice is yours
