Side Dish: Tomato onion garlic Chutney
Yields: 400 gms

One of the basic recipe in South Indian cuisine is Chutney, it is a must needed side in our daily breakfast. Whenever you visit an Indian restaurant you can view many food varieties in the menu when coming to South Indian Breakfast section or starters, you could have come through a list of breakfast recipes, we frequently make thick consistency dip as side we call it ‘Chutney’. If you order Dosa or idly varieties or vada or fritters, you will definitely receive a side along with main dishes.
Chutney’s can be made in endless ways, mostly prepared with the common ingredients are peanuts, sesame, tomatoes, onions, garlic, salt,spices, dal, tamarind and salt. The ingredients might vary from one to other chutney recipes, if you ask me, what’s my favorite it is obviously red chilly onion chutney it’s spicy tho and tasty as well ☺️
Today, I made it completely Vegan so who’s looking for vegan dips, this is the best choice for you. Let’s start with Ingredients and Procedure
Ingredients:
- Coconut Oil – 1/2 Tb sp (you can use any cooking oil)
- White onion – 1 medium – diced
- Red Tomatoes – 2 medium – chopped
- Garlic clove – 1 medium – chopped
- Bengal Gram / Chana dal – 1 tb sp
- Kasminri Red chillies/ byadgi chillies – 3
- Salt – 3/4 tsp
- Red chilly Powder – 1/2 teaspoon ( if you are using regular dried red chillies you can skip chilly powder)
- Tamarind paste – 1/2 teaspoon
For tempering:
- Coconut oil – 1/2 Tb sp
- Mustard seeds – 1/4 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
- Curry leaves – 8
Procedure:
- Heat a sauce pan, add 1/2 tb sp oil
- Add in Bengal Gram, garlic let them roast for 1-2 minutes
- Then goes in chopped onion and dry red chillies, sauté more 2 minutes
- Next add in chopped tomatoes, salt, tamarind paste. Sauté 3 minutes
- Add 1/2 cup of water and cook until tomatoes become mushy
- Turn off heat and let it cool down and grind into fine paste
- Again heat a pan, add oil, mustard, cumin seeds and curry leaves then goes in grounded paste and stir continuously for 2 minutes and turn off heat
- Serve it with your favorite breakfast/ starter
