South Indian Recipe: Tomato Pappu RasamΒ

Rasam is a traditional South Indian recipe includes in South Indian lunch meal along with Sambar, dal, curd rice and side curries. It can be served as savory soup or with white rice and Papad. Rasam is a fluid consistency, it’s base of taminard pulp, spices, toor dal, tomatoes, vegetables and garlic cloves.

It’s so authentic and traditional dish, simple to make and delicious too. I hope you could try and enjoy Indian flavours.

Let’s start with Ingredients and follows Procedure

Ingredients:

  • Red Gram/ Kandi Pappu – 80 gms
  • Tomatoes – 3 medium sized- diced
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – 6
  • Garlic – Chopped – 2 Tb sp
  • Hing/ Asafoetida – pinch
  • Dry Red chillies – 2
  • Cilantro – Chopped – 1/4 cup
  • Salt – 1/2 Tb sp
  • Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Tamarind pulp – 1 Tb sp ( soaked and extracted water)
  • Rasam Powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Jaggery – 1 inch piece
  • Oil – 1/2 Tb sp
  • Water – 1 1/2 liters

Procedure:

  • Add toor dal/ Kandi Pappu along with tomatoes πŸ…Β with a pinch of turmeric powder and water in a pressure cooker for 3 whistles or until cooked
  • Take out in a bowl and keep aside
  • Now, heat a medium sized pan over medium heat
  • Add oil , mustard seeds, cumin seeds & curry leaves. Saute till splutter
  • Next add pinch of Asafoetida, dry Red chillies and chopped garlic cloves. Saute till garlic becomes light brown in color
  • Then Add in turmeric powder and give it a stir
  • Next add cooked dal and tomatoes πŸ…, mix well and add water
  • Finally add salt, Rasam Powder, jaggery piece, tamarind pulp and mix well
  • Let it boil and stir mean while, when it’s starts bubbling reduce the heat to low and stir.
  • Cook it for more 10 minutes and turn off heat
  • Add cilantro and mix well, now Pappu charu is ready to serve as soup or combine with hot rice 🍚

Note:

  • Rasam Powder can be used store bought or homemade.
  • Adjust spices according to taste
  • Usually garlic cloves crushed using stone and pestle but I chopped garlic in this recipe. I hope you can use any method as you like
