Lunch recipe: Dal Khichdi

Dal khichdi is a kind of thick porridge πŸ₯£Β which contains mixed vegetables, Yellow lentils, rice, spices, cilantro, mint leaves and few add ons. It’s so simple to make and a good way to have healthy food with lots of vegetables. A quick meal packed with veggies, protein and spices cooked in one-pot, you can cook either in pressure cooker or electric cooker both works out well.

This dish originated from both south India and North India but I made few changes in my recipe which turned out tasty, healthy and authentic. I hope you could try and enjoy 😊

Let’s start with Ingredients and follows Procedure


  • Split Yellow Moong Dal/ Yellow Lentils – 80 gms ( wash & soak 15 mins)
  • White Rice – 80 gms ( wash twice and keep aside)
  • Carrot – 1 – Diced – ( Peel off )
  • Red Radish – 5 – diced
  • White radish – 1 – Diced ( Peel off)
  • Onion – 1 small – diced
  • Tomato πŸ…Β – 1 medium – finely chopped
  • Ginger garlic paste – 1/2 Tb sp
  • Mint leaves – 20 – wash & chop
  • Coriander leaves- wash & chop
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – 5
  • Salt – 1/2 Tb sp
  • Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Red chilly powder – 1 tsp
  • Green chillies – 3 – slits
  • Coriander Powder – 1 Tb sp
  • Butter – 1 Tb sp
  • Water – 560 ml


  • Keep a heavy bottomed pan or cooker over medium heat
  • Add butter, cumin seeds, green chillies, curry leaves. Saute a minute
  • Next add ginger garlic paste and chopped onions
  • Saute 2 mins and add tomato, mix well and stir till it becomes soft
  • Then Add Red radish, carrot and white radish, combine well.
  • Next add salt, turmeric powder, red chilly powder, coriander leaves , mint leaves and coriander leaves. Mix everything well for a minute
  • Immediately add rice and moong Dal or yellow lentils.Β Mix well and add water
  • Close with lid and put whistle, cook it over medium heat for 3 whistles
  • Turn off heat and let the pressure goes off, open lid slowly and mix well
  • Serve hot with any crunchy sides like potato chips or Β boondiΒ πŸ˜‹

  • Adjust spices according to taste
  • Instead of butter you can use ghee or oil
  • If you would like to prepare for kids reduce spice level
  • You can add any vegetable as you wish to have in khichdi
