South Indian Breakfast Recipe: Podi Uttapam With Idly Batter/ Idly Batter Uttapam/ Podi Uttapam

Uttapam is one of my favorite South Indian breakfast when it is loaded with toppings such as onion, Carrot, cilantro, Capsicum/ bell pepper and final twist by sprinkling idly Podi on it.. so don’t miss this lovely Uttapam, do try & let me know how it turned out to you πŸ‘©πŸ»β€πŸ³πŸ™‚

Let’s start with Ingredients and follows Procedure


To make Uttapam Batter:

  • Idly Batter Β – 500 ml
  • Idly Podi Β – 100 gms
  • Rice Flour – 1/4 cup – 60 gms
  • Water – 60 ml
  • Salt – 1/2 tsp

Toppings: Finely choppedΒ 

  • Green chillies – 2
  • Onion – 1/2 cup – 120 gms
  • Yellow Bell pepper/ Capsicum – 1/2
  • Carrot – 1/4 cup
  • Cilantro – 1/4 cup
  • Ghee/ oil – To cook Uttapam


  • Take idly batter in a mixing bowl
  • Add rice flour, water & salt in it, mix well
  • Keep batter aside
  • Heat tawa either cast iron/ non stick over medium heat
  • Sprinkle water and wipe off with onion/ paper towel
  • Smear tawa with 1 tsp oil and wipe off with paper towel
  • Now add 1 full ladle of prepared batter, spread round shape as shown in picture
  • Uttapam is a thick South Indian pancake, you can also spread them into thin crepe if Β you wish so but only drawback is toppings won’t stick to Uttapam πŸ™ƒ
  • Add toppings all together/ one by one it’s your choice
  • Cover with lid and cook till bottom of Uttapam changes to golden brown
  • Sprinkle 2 tb spΒ Idly PodiΒ and apply oil/ ghee
  • Press with spatula to stick Podi on Uttapam
  • Flip carefully and cook the other side for about 30 secs or till it cooks completely
  • Serve with coconut chutney/Coriander Coconut Chutney/Β Tomato πŸ… Chutney

  • Adjust spices according to taste
  • Batter should be semi thickness ( not pouring) consistency
  • You can also make Uttapam withΒ Dosa batterΒ by following same process only thing you need to skip rice flour & water
  • Toppings are all your choice like green Capsicum, spring onions, tomato, mint or anything you could wish to have πŸ˜‹
