Breakfast recipe: Steel Cut Oats Pongal

In any South Indian home Easy and quick breakfast recipe is Upma/ Pongal people who like Upma are very less but most of the people who likes Upma in different variations if it cooked with spices, Veggies which makes your Upma tasty & delicious πŸ˜‹

Upma/ Pongal is a kind of thick porridge which is smooth & easy to swallow especially for kids.Β Usually Pongal is prepared with rice, yellow moong Dal, spices and ghee.. on healthy basis I made Pongal with oats instead of rice.. it turned out delicious πŸ˜‹

Pongal can made in two varieties one is sweet and other savory. I prepared savory which is peppery and nutty πŸ˜€

Now a days, most of you like Oats in any way there are many varieties with Oats so today I’m sharing quick Oats Pongal. I hope you like it

Let’s start with ingredients and follows Procedure

Ingredients:

  • Steel Cut Oats – 180 gms
  • Split Yellow Moong Dal – 80 gms
  • Fine Black pepper powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Salt – 1 tsp
  • Ghee – 2 tb sp ( melted )
  • Hing/ Asafoetida – 1/4 tsp
  • Curry Leaves – 4 to 5
  • Cashew nuts – split – 10-12 pieces
  • Water – 480 ml

Procedure:

Prepreparation:

  • Add split yellow moong Dal in a bowl of water
  • Soak 30 mins
  • Keep aside

Process of making Oats Pongal:

  • Heat a skillet pan over medium heat
  • Add ghee
  • Add cumin seeds, curry leaves and cashew nuts
  • Saute 30 secs and add pepper powder, hing & salt
  • Saute more 30 secs
  • Next Add steel cut oats
  • Saute one minute
  • Add soaked split yellow moong Dal
  • Mix well and add water.
  • Stir water and close with a lid
  • Cook 10-12 mins
  • Open lid and check.. oats cooked well
  • Serve hot with peanut chutney or coconut chutney…
  • Kids will enjoy.. Happy cooking and enjoy your day

Note:

  • Adjust spices according to taste
  • You can use melted butter instead of ghee
  • If you’re using rolled oats reduce water consistency.
  • Suppose if you add 150 gms of rolled oats and 50 gms of split yellow moong Dal, add 300-350 ml water..
