Breakfast recipe: Oats Upma :South Indian style

Β In any Indian home Easy and quick breakfast recipe is Upma, people who like Upma are very less but most of the people who likes Upma in different variations if it cooked with spices, Veggies which makes your Upma tasty & delicious πŸ˜‹

Upma is a kind of thick porridge which is smooth & easy to swallow especially for kids. It’s from south India which is prepared with semolina/ broken wheat/ Sooji / rava / Oats and also contains onion, tomato, green chillies etc.,

I made a tasty Upma with steel cut oats which is a healthy dish and high fiber breakfast recipe, you can make when you got bore of eating normal Upma..

Now a days, most of you like Oats in any way there are many varieties with Oats so today I’m sharing basic and quick Oats Upma with vegetables.. I hope you like it

Let’s start with ingredients and follows Procedure


  • Steel cut oats – 240 gms
  • Water – 720 ml
  • Red Onion – 1 cup – finely chopped
  • Tomato πŸ…Β – 1 cup – finely chopped
  • Green Bell Pepper/ Capsicum – 1 cup – finely chopped
  • Oil – 1 tb sp
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Urad Dal – 1/2 tb sp
  • Bengal gram – Β 1/2 tb sp
  • Curry leaves – 5 – chopped
  • Garlic cloves – medium – 2 – finely chopped
  • Green chilly – 1 – finely chopped
  • Salt – 1/2 tb sp


  • Heat skillet pan add oil over medium heat
  • Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, urad dal, Bengal gram, curry leaves, garlic cloves & green chillies
  • Saute 30 secs
  • Add chopped onions and capsicum
  • Mix well &Β Saute 1 minute
  • Add chopped tomatoes πŸ…Β and saute 1 minute
  • Add water and salt, mix well
  • Add Oats when water started boiling
  • Cover with lid and cook on low heat
  • In between Stir couple of times and it will take around 12 mins to cook completely
  • Turnoff heat and don’t open lid
  • Let it set one more min
  • Serve immediately 😊
  • Happy cooking & enjoy your day

  • Adjust spices according to taste
  • You can also add chopped carrot and cilantro
  • You can also use canola oil or olive oil instead of sunflower 🌻 oil
  • Slow cook is best method to cook Oats perfectly
