Bottle Gourd is a vegetable which is cultivated in many countries you can make many delicious recipes out of it. It can be used in South Indian curries, North Indian Gravy curry, sweets, snacks etc.,

Bottle gourd has lots of water content it fights against dehydration , it is used for many natural remedies you can also drink a glass of bottle gourd juice with lemon juice. It washes out impurities in your body.

Bottle Gourd:Β Vitamins: A, C, E, B & K
Minerals: Calcium, magnesium & potassium

Ginger: Vitamin C & magnesium

Coriander leaves: Vitamin A & C

You can checkout my previous recipes with bottle gourd and I will share links at the end of post. I like all vegetables and love to make them without losing nutrients in it so I blanched Bottle Gourd and then used in curry. Detailed information down below

Coming to Recipe, it is the best combination with any Indian breakfast/ rice / roti / poori etc., I shared these breakfast recipes links at end of this post.

Today, I prepared Bottle Gourd curry with curd and used spices which gives a perfect arom to this dish.

Let’s start with ingredients and follows Procedure


  • Bottle gourd – 1/2 – 400 gms – peel off – diced
  • Onion – 1/2 – diced ( White/ Red )
  • Curd/ Yogurt – 240 ml
  • Besan / Bengal gram powder – 2 tb sp
  • Coriander seeds – 1 tsp
  • Ginger – peeled off – diced – 1 tb sp
  • Green chillies – 4
  • Salt – 1/2 tb sp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Coriander leaves – chopped – 1/4 cup

For Tempering:

  • Mustard seeds/ Avvalu – 1/2 tea spoon
  • Cumin seeds/ Jeera – 1/2 tea spoon
  • Urad dal/ Minapappu – 1 tea spoon
  • Bengal gram/ Senagapappu – 1 tea spoon
  • Curry leaves – 4 to 5
  • Oil – 1 tb sp



Step 1: Blanching bottle gourd

  • Heat sauce pan over medium heat
  • Add water, pinch of salt & turmeric powder in a sauce pan
  • Let it boil
  • Add diced bottle gourd
  • Mix well & cook 5 mins
  • Close it with lid
  • Turn off heat and drain water in a bowl
  • Perserve bottle gourd water to use in curry and Keep cooked bottle gourd pieces aside


Step 2: Masala for curry

  • In a blender add green chillies, ginger & coriander seeds
  • Blend till smooth paste
  • Take a bowl of curd
  • Add blended Masala, Besan powder/ Bengal gram powder, turmeric powder & salt
  • Mix well & make sure no lumps in it
  • Keep it aside


Step 3: Making Bottle Gourd curry with yogurt/ curd


  • Heat skillet pan over medium heat
  • Add oil, tempering and chopped Onions
  • Saute 1 min
  • Add cooked bottle gourd
  • Saute & add mixed curd
  • Mix well & add 1/4 th cup of bottle gourd water. If you doesn’t like Bottle Gourd water You can also add normal water.
  • Cook 10 mins
  • Turn off heat
  • Add chopped cilantro/ coriander leaves
  • Mix well
  • Sorakaya Majjiga Pulusu is ready
  • Serve hot with rice / roti/ poori
  • Happy cooking & enjoy your day

  • To make more tasty and healthy you can also add cooked beans along with bottle gourd
  • Adjust spices according to taste
  • Perserve upto 3 days in refrigerator
