South Indian Thali: Main course : Lunch

South Indian Thali is a full meal at lunch in home/ restaurant – Andhra, India ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ

Mainly, in South Indian lunch contains lots of vegetable based curries and lentil based Dal or Sambar. In vegetable curry either it could be stir fry, deep fry or boiled vegetables curry mixed with spices and tempering.

In lentil based Dal is a side dish with rice as main course, Dal or Pappu contains red gram Dal, onions, tomatoes, any leafy vegetable, tamarind, spices and ends with tempering.

Sambar contains lots of vegetables and lentils with tamarind extract, spices and ends with tempering.

Rasam or chaaru is a traditional side dish which looks like ย liquid soup suitable with hot rice and Papad is side combination.

Curd rice is finishing touch for the complete South Indian meal.

End every meal with a sweet/ dessert to fulfill your happiness โ˜บ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜‰

Today, I prepared South Indian dishes – two curries, one Dal, one type of rasam, Lemon rice, etc.,

Carrot Talimpu/ Curry: Side Dish

  • Carrot ๐Ÿฅ•ย – 2 – finely chopped – 1 bowl
  • Split yellow moong Dal – 30 gms ( soak 15 mins in water)
  • Fresh grated coconut – 3 tb sp
  • Green chillies- finely chopped – 2
  • Salt – 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander leaves – chopped – 2 tb sp

For tempering:

  • Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1/4 tsp
  • Bengal gram – 1 tsp
  • Urad Dal – 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves – 3 to 4
  • Dry red chilly – 1
  • Oil – 1 tb sp

Procedure:

  • Heat pan over medium heat
  • Add oil , tempering & green chillies
  • Let them splutter
  • Saute and add chopped carrot
  • Mix well
  • Saute 1 min & add soaked moong Dal along with water
  • Mix well
  • Close with lid
  • Cook 5 mins
  • Add salt & fresh grated coconut
  • Mix well & cook further 1 min
  • Turn off Cooktop/ flame
  • Add chopped coriander leaves
  • Mix well
  • Carrot curry is ready to serve

Raw Banana Curry/ Aaratikaya Talimpu: Side Dish

Ingredients:

  • Raw Banana – peeled off – 2 – diced
  • Red onion – 1/2 – chopped
  • Salt – 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/8 tsp

Masala Powder for curry:

  • Red chilly powder – 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder – 1 tsp
  • Pepper powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds – 1 tsp
  • Garlic cloves – 1
  • Roasted split Bengal gram – 30 gms
  • Dry coconut powder – 2 tb sp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Coriander leaves – 3 tb sp – chopped

For Tempering:

  • Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1/4 tsp
  • Bengal gram – 1 tsp
  • Urad Dal – 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves – 3 to 4
  • Oil – 1 tb sp

Procedure:

  • Heat pan over medium heat
  • Add oil and tempering
  • Let them splutter
  • Add onion and saute 1 min
  • Add chopped raw banana, salt and turmeric powder
  • Saute 1 min
  • Add 1/4 cup water
  • Close with lid
  • Cook 5 mins
  • Meanwhile, blend all ingredients mentioned in Masala Powder for curry
  • Add blended Masala Powder
  • Mix well and cook 1 min
  • Turn off flame/ Cooktop
  • Add chopped coriander leaves
  • Mix well
  • Raw Banana curry is ready to serve

Lemon Rice/ Chitrannam : Main Course

Ingredients:

  • Cooked Rice – 1 bowl
  • Roasted peanuts – 80 gms
  • Green chillies – 4 – sliced
  • Coriander leaves – chopped – 3 tb sp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Lemon juice – 2 tb sp
  • Salt – 1 tsp

For Tempering:

  • Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1/4 tsp
  • Bengal gram – 1 tsp
  • Urad Dal – 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves – 3 to 4
  • Oil – 2 tb sp

Procedure:

  • Heat skillet pan over medium heat
  • Add oil and tempering
  • Let them splutter
  • Add sliced green chillies, ground nuts
  • Saute 1 min
  • Add salt, turmeric powder
  • Mix well
  • Turn off flame
  • Add lemon juice and saute
  • Next add cooked rice & chopped coriander leaves
  • Mix well
  • Lemon rice is ready to serve
