Masala Puri: Evening snack : Street food : South India

Street food, most of the people like to have street food daily or weekly or once in a month because they are tasty. Β In street food they are many different varieties in different places all over the world.

In South India, they serve Pani puri, chat,Masala puri, Gobi Manchurian, fried pakoda, onion fritters, sweets, juices, etc., in street food for Evening snack

But Today I prepared a famous and mouth watering street food special in south India of course all over India that’s Masala PuriπŸ˜‹ It will be tasty and you like to have one more plate again.

Such a delicious street food I like to prepare at home with family on weekends. You can prepare this at weekends/ small party at home/ get together/ Bday treat/ can have it for no reason πŸ˜‰

I bought puri’s from store, if you have so much time you can make them nicely at home else grab a prepared pack from store it’s easily available. Soon, I will post how to make puri’s for chaat/ Pani puri/ Masala puri

Today I prepared a famous street food anyone would like to have at winter/ evenings/ party at home 🏑

Let’s start with pre-preparation, ingredients and follows Procedure


1. Green chutney/ Mint chutney:


Mint leaves – 1/2 cup

Coriander leaves – 1/2 cup

Green Chillies – 5

Salt – 1 tsp

Tamarind extract – 1 tsp


  • Blend all ingredients in mixer grinder
  • Add 1/3 cup of water and make smooth paste
  • Take out in a bowl
  • Keep it aside


2. Sweet chutney:


Dates – seedless – 3

Tamarind extract – 1 tb sp

Red chilly powder Β – 1/2 tsp

Salt – 1/2 tsp


  • Add all ingredients in mixer grinder
  • Blend it smooth paste by adding 1/3 cup of water


3. Mashed potatoes and peas:


Potatoes – 2

Green peas – 250 gms – frozen

Salt – 1/2 sp

Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp


  • Peel off & chop potatoes
  • Add chopped potatoes & peas, salt & turmeric powder in pressure cooker
  • Cook for 1 whistle
  • Let it become cool
  • Mash gently
  • keep it aside


4. Puree:


Clove – 1

cinnamon – 1

Garlic – 4 – peeled off cloves

Ginger – 1 tbsp

Onion – medium – 1 – diced

Green chillies – 4

Tomatoes – 2 – medium – diced

Oil – 2 tb sp


  • Heat skillet pan over medium heat
  • Add oil, all the above mentioned ingredients in it
  • Saute 4 to 5 mins till they become soft
  • Turnoff Cooktop
  • Let it become cool
  • Blend it till smooth puree
  • Puree ready
  • keep it aside


5. Masala:


Chat Masala – 1 tsp

Dry Mango powder – 1 tsp

Garam Masala Powder – 1 tsp

Red chilli powder – 1/2 tb sp

Salt – 1/2 tb sp

Prepared Puree

prepared mashed potatoes and peas


  • Heat pan over medium heat
  • Add puree
  • Let it cook & Saute 2 mins
  • Add salt, red chilly powder, Garam Masala Powder, dry Mango powder, chaat masala powder
  • Mix well
  • When puree started boiling add mashed potatoes and peas
  • Mix well
  • Saute and cook more 5 mins
  • Adjust consistency by adding 1/2 cup or more water
  • Cook till it’s become soft , tasty and aromatic
  • Masala ready
  • Keep it aside


6. Preparation of Masala Puri & Toppings:


Puri’s – as required

Prepared Masala

Green chutney

Sweet chutney


Finely chopped onion – 1/2 cup

Finely chopped tomato – 1/2 cup

Grated carrot – 1

Cilantro – chopped – 1/2 cup

Lemon juice – 2 tb sp

Sev – 1 small cup

Mixed Masala Powder:

Red chilly powder – 1/4 tsp

Cumin powder – 1/4 tsp

Coriander powder – 1/4 tsp

Garam masala powder – 1/4 tsp

Salt – 1/4 tsp


  • Mix well spices & salt
  • Take out in a cup
  • To sprinkle on top of Masala puri

Serving Masala puri:


  • Get set all the above mentioned ingredients
  • Take a plate
  • Place 8 puri’s on it
  • Press gently with hand to break them
  • Add 2 ladles of Masala on it
  • Add toppings, onion, tomato, grated carrot
  • Next add cilantro, green chutney, sweet chutney
  • Sprinkle mixed Masala powder
  • Next add lemon juice
  • Garnish with sev
  • Perfect Masala Puri ready
