Idly/ Dosa Podi is a coarse powder which contains roasted and ground Urad Dal, Bengal gram/ chick pea, sesame seeds, dry Red chillies and salt.

Podi means powder, you can have this as side dish for Idly, Dosa or in hot plain rice with Ghee.

This recipe is famous in tamilnadu and usually prepared in Tamilnadu, south India. It’s simple and quick recipe to prepare and also you can store it in an airtight container.

So it remains fresh in taste, mostly you can store this upto 2 months. IΒ promise you finish it off before this duration, because it tastes like that.

Urad Dal:

Vitamin : B6

Minerals: Iron, calcium, Potassium, Sodium and MagnesiumΒ 

Chick pea/ Bengal Gram:

Vitamin: B6

Minerals: Iron, calcium,potassium and magnesiumΒ 

Sesame seeds:

Vitamin: B6

Minerals: Iron, calcium,potassium and magnesium

Today, I prepared fresh & tasty Idly/Dosa podi with good aroma of Dal and sesame seeds.

Let’s start with ingredients and follows Procedure

Ingredients:

Urad Dal / Minapappu – 60 gms

Bengal Gram/ Chickpea – 60 gms

Sesame seeds – white – 30 gms

Dry Red chillies – 7

Salt – 1 tsp

Oil – 1 tsp

Procedure:

  • Heat frying pan on medium heat
  • Add sesame seeds and dry roast till color changes to golden brown
  • Take out in a plate
  • Add 1/2 tsp oil and roast Urad Dal till color changes to golden brown
  • Take out in a plate
  • Add 1/2 tsp oil and roast chickpea/ Bengal gram till color changes to golden brown
  • Take out in a plate
  • Add dry Red chillies and fry till color changes
  • Take out in a plate
  • Let them become cool for 15 mins
  • In mixer grinder add roasted sesame seeds and blend till coarse powder
  • Take out in a plate
  • Next, add roasted urad Dal, chickpea/ Bengal gram in mixer grinder
  • Blend till coarse powder
  • Take out in a plate
  • Next, add salt and roasted dry Red chillies and blend till coarse powder
  • Mix well all blended ingredients together
  • Store in an airtight container to remain fresh
  • Serve it with ghee on hot Idly / Dosa / Rice 🍚
